Print media analysis

Magazine adverts

Mr & Mrs Smith

This is an advert for an action film in FHM. The magazine is aimed at men and this is shown in the advert. Lead actress Angelina Jolie is pictured in a revealing dress on the cover of the DVD. FHM magazine research has shown that pictures like this sell more magazines and it is reasonable to assume that the same applies to films as well and so this is shown to encourage more men to buy the film. There are also a large amount of guns in the pictures. This indicates the presence of shooting in the film but this is most likely to appeal to the men reading the advert who would be more interested in watching that. While the media theorist Fiske would argue that the audience of the advert cannot be generalised guns and women are key points to certain people, FHM contains women in a similar way and so it is fair to say that this part of the audience would be looking at the advert.

The title has what looks like a tear in the paper because of the "do us part" part of the title. The physical nature f the appearance of the rip could relate to the physical nature of an action movie.

The advert is an interesting representation of the action movie stereotype and possible aspiration figure. Brad pit would appear to play a spy or assassin or some sort of guy who uses a gun on a regular basis as he is holding one by his side. He is wearing a suit looks confidant and is married to the character Angelina Jolie is playing. While this is obviously unattainable in most ways it presents an interesting fantasy aspiration for its audience and a possible role model on which Gauntlett would suggest people might try to base some but not all of their own personality’s on. Giving people this idea can be a persuasive method and it is therefore a way used by the institution to sell the DVD.

Salt

Salts lead actress is also Angelina Jolie. As in Mr & Mrs Smith she is a typical male fantasy and is a selling point as shown by FHM research. While this movie is most likely action, as shown by the prominent gun, it would also appear to use the idea of mystery to sell itself. Aside from the vague title there is a line of text saying, "Who is salt?" This implies that one would have to watch the movie to find out and therefore the institution has purposely left this a mystery to sell the movie. The mystery is also heightened by the blurry background, which offers no clues as to the setting of the movie. The advert is unconventional in its lack of features it relies mostly on the single idea of mystery and there is little else to say about it.

The Transporter

The most obvious feature of this advert is the stereotypical action movie character in the air firing two guns at a time. This is an action movie convention and cliché that is common to many movies. The advert also features women in revealing clothes but it also has a car burning the title into the page. Fast cars like guns and women are things that the stereotypical male audience member likes and by putting it prominently it shows the intentions of the institution.

The text is all bold and italic. This makes it stand out. While the picture along with most of the advert is black and white the title in the middle is in colour, specifically the colour of fire. This makes it stand out from the rest of the advert. This may be because the institution only expected its audience to take a glance at the advert and wanted to make sure that the title is both figuratively and literally burned into their memory. This is also shown in how the title is in the centre to give maximum chance to be seen with a mere quick glance at the page.

Movie Posters

Knight and Day

The poster shows the conventions of an action movie, it has a gun and a motorbike on it. While this may show that it is another movie aimed at the stereotypical male audience it is in fact the female lead that is holding the gun. The woman is in a position, protected by the male protagonist but it still shows her as being a strong character, unconventional when there is a male protagonist as well.

Neither the layout nor the text would seem to suggest anything relevant about the institution or the intended audience. Both are plain and without distinguishing or important features.

Batman Begins

The poster of Batman Begins has a strong recurring theme of bats. Bats are traditionally a sign of darkness and evil. Batman however is a well know hero but the connection to bats would seem to show that he is being portrayed as a renegade or someone with a dark side. This is shown by how he is turned away from the light and the city, a symbol of establishment, the institution is probably trying to give batman a different character to the traditional superhero so as to attract an audience apart from children or previous batman fans. This may not work however as Fiske says that the audience has more power to interpret than the institution to send a message. Batman is a very well know character and if Adorno is right about mass media creating a social order then people would read the Batman Begins poster as the batman that they recognise from the older comic or TV show instead of the darker one that the institution is trying to put forward despite the current image of Batman.

While batman begins is an action movie, the general style of the poster is unconventional. The dark look with the less than heroic protagonist is closer to a drama or thriller than an action movie. Most action movie heroes are shown at their best in the posters to give the character a single image that encapsulates the character they are. Dramas tend to show their characters in their worst moments, when the emotional climax of the movie is taking making the character who they are. The unconventional nature of the style is again because of the institution trying to appeal to a different audience by trying to change the image of Batman.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

This poster follows a lot of the conventions, as it is very similar to other Indiana Jones movie posters. The protagonist is in a central part of the poster with the other main characters around it. The protagonist is also the biggest image there to highlight its importance. The typography in the title is also very similar to that of the other movies. While the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a recent movie the institution that made it clearly want it to be as identifiable to the previous movies as possible. Unlike Batman Begins the modern movie audience likes the same style of movie as the original Indiana Jones movies and so they are trying to show that it is of a similar style by portraying it the same in the poster.

The layout of each of the characters pictures is interesting. While there is no distinct order to the positioning the characters are place in a way that conforms to the background. The two characters in the bottom left seem to be parallel to the left side of the pyramid. The crystal skull in a similar position as one would expect the sun to be. This highlights its importance to the plot and probably to the natives that seem to be in some sort of army. The sun is well known to be a religious symbol to many ancient societies such as Aztecs and other cultures that use the type of pyramid shown. All the characters seem to in some way be turned away from the skull. Possibly showing the reverence or fear towards the object.

Matt media analysis

Pirates of the Caribbean curse of the black pearl
It starts off with a piece of gold falling then the selection menu comes from this, the music in the background is dark and mysterious, the piece of gold has a skull on it which is very in keeping with the pirate theme of things.
A black screen and loud background noise of something coming together then lead to pirates of the Caribbean the curse of the black pearl in pirate writing which is only almost script.
Fog that a ship emerges out off still the noises in the background slow zoom into a small girl singing pirate songs on the bow of a ship. One of the crew grabs the girl telling her not to sing pirate songs on the ship because it would curse them all, says it in a whispering voice to almost scare everyone, then the reassuring voice of a man in uniform tells him to stop.
Explains hanging to the little girl when she says it would be exciting to be a pirate, father concerned about her learning about it she finds it fascinating, possible link for later on in the film.
Sees umbrella floating in the water the sees a small boy on a piece of wood, don’t know where they have come from, they drag him up still alive. Then they see the burnt ship that has been attacked by pirates Liz told to accompany boy, relationship forming. Finds out his name is will turner sees a piece of pirate gold, she keeps it they take the boy below without knowing he's a pirate she sees the pirate ship then she wakes up, zoom out from her eyes into her slightly lit room.
Goes into a secret compartment of a draw and gets out piece of gold from will turner telling us its not just a dream has to hide it so her dad doesn't see it when he comes in to wake her up and give her a dress. Talking very posh, very well spoken. Show he has class and the dress and his clothes show he is of a high rank.
We see jack sparrow standing on top of a mast, powerful captain of a ship the we see him jump down into a small boat realising that that is his ship, bold triumphant music playing, he then looks across so the camera follows and we see two bodies hanging there and a sign saying pirates ye be warned, then he gestures to take his hat of to the as if to say thank you that its not me he rides into port on the mast then steps off onto the pier and walks down then gets told to pay up and his name he bargains with this pays more and then takes the bag of money from the desk, empire music playing, safe hold, out post over looking the troops, faint music as he looks at the ship, troops marching for the mans position raise. Js marching down to ship gets stopped by two men and then tries to wangle his way out of being captured so that he can get the ship. Whilst they are arguing JS slips behind them onto the ship. Contrast with the nice party going on, sweet music slow dancing romantic talk,
She falls of the cliffs JS sees and jumps in from the ship to save her the pirate medallion sends out a shock wave jack saves her tense music still in water guards running to the pier cuts corset off and she comes back round jack finds medallion and asks where she got it and then the guards turn up and hold him at gun point. Commodore goes through his stuff “you are without a doubt the worst pirate i have ever heard off” “ah but you have heard of me replies JS” putting some comedy into the situation before he gets dragged away with Es protesting. Grabs the rope releases the cannon fats paced music for his get away open firing still escaping music slows down. Guards storm the town looking for him he steals sword and hides in the blacksmiths to try and brake his chains. Lots of close up shots simple but effective allows you to see character better.

Salt
The advert is from a magazine and it shows Angelina Jolie holding a gun with two hands in quite a masculine stance, the background behind is all blurred giving the impression that it is a high paced action film and that is enhanced by the question written above the name of “who is salt?” the text says in big letter SALT and above that in smaller red letter Angelina Jolie because she is the main actress and having a big name star in would draw people into watching the film. There are no other actors names in big meaning that there is only AJ as the star which means she has the main role, which is typically a man in an action movie. The next biggest bit of text is when the film is coming out this is prominent so that you can see it clearly. AJ is off to the right side of the page almost like she is hiding or sneaking up on someone which gives the impression that she could be a spy, and the gun, phallic symbol possible used to make her appear more masculine and to show that there will be fights in the film reinforcing the idea of it being an action film, the text also does this it is a lot like the text you would find on a CIA computer screen if trawling through records of criminals and the way the question is phrased is very precise and to the point.
The transporter
The advert has a plain white background with a black and white picture of Jason Statham on it with the the title “the transporter in yellow on some flames over the top of him he is shown flying through the air holding two gun pointing them behind, this shows that there will be gun fights in the film thus being in keeping with the whole action genre this film has a quote from loaded magazine on the top because it is a good review of the film, they put it in black text so it contrasts with the white background, the yellow flames coming from the car show that there will be car chases in the film and that there will be fire and explosions also in keeping with the action film genre, he is wearing a suit which most spies do so that suggest that he could be a spy or someone undercover as a business man. The the flames trailing from the car you can see one of his fellow actors i think this could be Shu Qi as she is the next person whose name is on the poster. The skin head look that he is modelling is quite thug like and if you saw a skin head then you would cross over so maybe he is telling people not to mess with him.
Mr and Mrs smith
The most obvious thing on the page is the big rip down the centre showing that the couple aren’t really that connect but what they are connect on is strong enough to hold them together, the “till death do us part at the top also tells us that they are married but them facing away from each other and the rip tells us that their relationship can be rough at times the images below show that it is an action film but with some romance in there and the dvd cover is shown so that we know what it looks like when we go to buy it. This couples with the advert for when it comes out on dvd.

POC dead mans chest
Sword fighting on the beach lots of exaggerated swings of the swords to emphasis it, 3 men, manly thing to do , action films are a manly world because ES is sitting out trying to stop them, the swords are very big phallic symbol hence fast paced music, ES screaming, lots of close ups of the faces whilst fighting to show emotion, the “stupid ones” explain to the audience what is going on whilst JS WT and CN are still fighting, pirates steal chest whilst others still fighting men come out of water to collect chest whilst the 3 are still fighting. Lots of dangerous places to be I.e on top of a wall of a church. Fighting pauses JS tries to talk his way out again jack runs away whilst CN and WT fight, music stops in the background so we can hear what they are saying, music is once again fast paced when CN and WT resume fighting, the two pirates that have stolen the chest are rejoined running through the jungle where ES finds them tries to draw her sword but doesn’t have one so the pirates draw there swords on her just as they go to attack her DJs men show up and all 3 run away with the chest. CN and WT are still fighting and JS turns up to steal the key to the chest pirates and ES are fighting DJs men for the chest but one of DJs men picks up the chest and runs of with it, JS has key and sees DJs man running off with it he takes him out and grabs the chest and opens it up to find the heart, music stops whilst he inserts the key and then an eery sound is heard when it is unlocked and when it is opened we see JS reaction and then get a point of view shot and we hear the beating of the heart still with eery back music, the eery music fades into a music box slightly and then back to he sounds of the fight.ES and pirates are still fighting DJs men whilst JS is running away in his boat, one of DJs men finds him and their fight comes down to the beach because CN and WT roll in on a water wheel. Upbeat cheery music can be heard as the background music.
Night and day cinema poster
The poster has a black background whit TC and CD crouching down in the middle of it,CD is crouched behind TC this could be because she is quite a feminise character in the film but she fits in with the action genre because she is still holding a gun and pointing it with TC, both of their hands are on the gun showing that they work together in the film behind them is a splash or red orange and yellow, i believe this is because red orange and yellow are seen as action colours, the title Knight and Day is in big red letter above the image of TC and CD the red ties in with it being an action film. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have their names at the top of the poster, Their first names are small but in capital letter and their surnames and in big capital letters this could be because we don’t need their first names to know who they are, the producers being arrogant? We have big starts look at us.
Salt cinema poster
The poster is AJs face in the background with her name across the top in white letters so it contrasts with her dark hair across the main bit of her face is the word salt written in white capital letters and behind that salt is written in white in sort of a watermark but the letters are several times bigger than those written clearly this is to add mystery and possible hint at a back story within the film which explain how she came to become salt. The question “who is salt” is printed across her neck in white text so it is a simple poster but its eye catching because of its simplicity
Moonraker boat chase scene
The scene starts with the boat coming out of a bush, we hear noises of the jungle, then we cut to a PoV shot to see what JB is seeing, after that we cut to a shot of JB driving the boat slowly but because it is a motorboat we know it can go a lot faster so we know he is sneaking around. Then a long shot showing the boat then back inside the boat to where he is reading a map, the sounds of the jungle stop and we hear gun shot and we see birds flying out of a tree and then another gunshot followed by a shot of the water with mines exploding on stand we see JB throw a map away and grab hold of the steering wheel to avoid the mines, we then see another boat come speeding towards him full of men dressed in yellow outfits firing what appear to be grenades at him this is what i thought earlier were the mines. We then see JB speeding off with the other boat following him at high speed, this is because if you have a chase with things with engines in then your film sticks to the action genre, we now get long mid shots and the sounds are just those of the boats as they power down the river we see JB inside the cockpit then he looks back and the camera gives us another Pov shot, we then hear machine gun sounds. He looks at something on the dashboard and the camera follows where he is looking and he pulls out an instrument panel and pushes a button, the camera jumps to the back of the boat which is opening as we join it, we then hear a mechanical noise as back of the boat opens up and we see JB look back and press mine eject, we look back and see two mines roll out of the back of the boat we see the following boat skirt round them and the captain smiles as we cut back to the boat and see two more mines drop out, then the next shot is the following boat hitting one and being blown up
Live and let die cinema poster
The poster shows James bond and a woman on the front and JB hang gliding into a bad guy behind off set to the right, the main background colour is gold – expensive gives you some idea of what is going to be in the film, the 007 logo in the bottom corner lets you know its a James bond film just incase you didn’t know and the name live and let die is in gold writing over the top of 007 which is in big white writing, JB is looking serious and is dressed in a suit which tells you that it is an action film and not a comedy film, the woman is dressed in white which shows her innocence.
